템파의 2007년 한해 정리
Each stride forward meant the world to a team looking toward the future. So when newcomers Carlos Pena and Akinori Iwamura made their unexpected marks, it gave the lineup strength. When starters Scott Kazmir and James Shields began to fulfill every ounce of their potential, it gave the rotation hope.
By season's end, the team had made several deals to further complete its revitalization, transforming the pitching staff in a matter of days. How fitting that this offseason also brought with it a new logo, new colors and thoughts for a new stadium. The makeover may not have been complete, but it was certainly on its way.
So no, the wins weren't there -- at least not yet. But plenty of other accomplishments were, making this season perhaps as successful as the Rays could have hoped.
January
Two days into the New Year, the Rays were already working on their new beginning. In an effort to shore up a sketchy middle infield, the team acquired shortstop Brendan Harris from the Reds for a player to be named later -- and they couldn't have been more pleased with the results. After bouncing around to four teams over his first three years in the league, Harris stuck with the Rays, starting regularly at both shortstop and second base while hitting .286 with 12 home runs.
January also brought trouble when Elijah Dukes was arrested for marijuana possession, in what would become the first of many ongoing troubles for the outfielder this season. Dukes at times played a significant role for the Rays on the field -- hitting seven home runs in May -- but he constantly struggled off it, adding another turbulent chapter to his young career.

February
The Rays opened February with an insignificant move -- or so it seemed -- when they signed Pena to a Minor League deal, and invited him to Spring Training. Smart move. Pena finished the year with an astonishing 46 home runs and led the club in nearly every major offensive category.
When the Rays began spilling into St. Petersburg for the start of Spring Training, it would be for the last time. Last September, the team signed a 20-year partnership agreement to shift to a new spring complex in Charlotte County beginning in 2009.

March
A promising lineup took a late hit when Greg Norton -- one of the team's most productive hitters a year ago -- suffered a right knee injury at the end of Spring Training and would require surgery. The injury, however, was something of a blessing in disguise, as it gave Pena a chance to crack the roster after the Rays had reassigned him to Minor League camp.
Tampa Bay took another chance in giving the closer's job to 37-year-old Al Reyes, who had missed the entire previous season recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. That gamble worked, too, as Reyes saved nine games in April and converted 16 straight opportunities to open the season.

April
Starter Scott Kazmir gave the Rays early hope in his second start, when he struck out eight Blue Jays through three innings, though he eventually unraveled to allow four runs and take the loss. Still, Kazmir would finish the season with a 13-9 record and 3.48 ERA, leading the American League with 239 strikeouts.
Perhaps April's most disappointing development came when Iwamura, the club's Japanese rookie third baseman, hit the disabled list with a strained right oblique that would keep him out until late May. Iwamura had caught fire over the season's first three weeks, hitting .339 for the month.

May
The Rays headed to Orlando, Fla., in May to face the Rangers for three games at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, and the series was as big of a hit financially as it was at the plate. The Rays packed the stands of the outdoor venue -- averaging nearly 9,000 fans per game and nearly filling the stadium to capacity -- and showed their appreciation by banging out 41 hits and scoring 23 times in a sweep of the Rangers.
May's memories, however, were not all pleasant. The Rays placed fragile center fielder Rocco Baldelli on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain, and the ensuing storyline took on a familiar tone. Baldelli made a late-season rehabilitation attempt but never made it back, ultimately hitting just .204 in 35 games. Two days after Baldelli's DL stint began, the Rays also lost catcher Josh Paul until late July, when he found himself on the wrong end of an ugly collision at home.

June
June, as it typically does for the Rays, began with hope. With the first overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft, the Rays selected David Price, a junior left-hander out of Vanderbilt who had been perched at the top of their Draft board since the previous summer. Price signed with the team two months later for $11.25 million over six years. "When you do something, you always want to be the best, bottom line," Price said.
After months of further turbulence, the Rays optioned Dukes to the Minors and placed him on the temporary inactive list. It was a difficult decision, and it came after Dukes' highly publicized personal problems -- among them the marijuana charge and a restraining order won by his wife -- became overwhelming. Said executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman: "We're doing what we believe is in the best interest of the organization and for Elijah. There will be a lot of people whose primary goal will be to get Elijah's life back in order."

July
The season's halfway point couldn't mask a brutal month for the Rays in which they managed to win just seven of their 27 games. The team opened the month at the tail end of an 11-game losing streak and by July's end had added an eight-game slump to the string of woes. Only left fielder Carl Crawford seemed immune, hitting .301 for the month and launching a home run in his second career All-Star Game. Crawford became the lone repeat All-Star in Rays history.
In a push to beat the clock, the Rays made a series of moves in the week before the non-waiver trading deadline. First, they shipped former closer Seth McClung to the Brewers for another reliever, Grant Balfour. A day later, former starting second baseman Jorge Cantu went to the Reds for three Minor Leaguers. And that same day, the Rays shipped powerful infielder Ty Wigginton to the Astros for a much-needed setup man, Dan Wheeler. Wheeler and Balfour would combine for 47 relief appearances down the stretch.

August
While the Rays started August slowly, they ended with perhaps their best stretch of baseball all year -- a run that included three-game sweeps of Oakland and Baltimore. Perhaps the most impressive game of all came on the month's final day, when rookie Andy Sonnanstine blanked the Yankees over eight innings of two-hit ball. Sonnanstine would finish the year third on the team with six wins, despite spending the season's first two months in the Minors.
Rays manager Joe Maddon announced that if the rehabbing Baldelli returned from injury, he wouldn't reclaim his starting job in center field. Instead, Maddon wanted B.J. Upton -- who split time between second base and center -- to settle permanently into the outfield. The plans for Baldelli never materialized, as he remained on the DL until season's end, but Upton enjoyed a breakout year with a .300 average, 24 home runs and 22 steals.

September
With three weeks remaining in the season, the Rays announced some of their future intentions when they picked up the two option years on Maddon's contract in a move that will keep Maddon managing the Rays through 2009. "I know it's a two-year extension, but I want to be here for years to come," Maddon said.
Still, not everything ended well in Tampa Bay. The Rays lost four straight over the season's final week before a win in Toronto closed out the year, and they wound up losing 13 of their final 18 games to finish with the league's worst record. "We have to get beyond this," Maddon said during that final stretch. "We have done better."

October
An original Ray came back to Tampa Bay when the team signed Dave Martinez to serve as Maddon's bench coach in 2008 -- a decade after he played right field during the team's inaugural season in 1998. Senior advisor Don Zimmer also announced he would return to the Rays in what will become his 60th season in professional baseball.
Pena's astounding year earned due recognition when he won the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award after the World Series and a month later snagged his first Silver Slugger Award. All of that ended a dream season for Pena, who rebounded from a frustrating year in the Minors to hit .282 with 46 home runs. "This is the most fun I've had playing baseball," Pena said.

November
Change was everywhere in November. First, the Rays unveiled their new logo, colors and uniform, and they announced that the word "Devil" had been dropped from the team's name. And the makeover wasn't complete. Three weeks later, the team revealed plans for a state-of-the-art retractable roof stadium, which could open as soon as 2012. "This is one of the most exciting things I've ever seen," Florida governor Charlie Crist said.
Shock hit when former Rays starter Joe Kennedy died at his Florida home on Nov. 23. Kennedy had spent the first three years of his young career in Tampa Bay after breaking in with Tampa Bay's Minor League system. "He really dedicated himself and was really on a mission to become a Major League pitcher," said Craig Weissmann, the Rays scout who signed Kennedy.
After years of believing that Delmon Young was their hope for the future, the Rays sent him to Minnesota in a six-player deal that landed starter Matt Garza and shortstop Jason Bartlett. Young was just weeks removed from finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year balloting to Boston's Dustin Pedroia, after he hit .288 with 13 homers. The Rays weren't done, either. A day after that deal, they added a cog to their bullpen, signing Troy Percival to a two-year contract to become the team's closer.

December
A troubled relationship came to an end at the Winter Meetings when the Rays sent Dukes to the Nationals in exchange for Minor League reliever Glenn Gibson. That Friedman managed to acquire a left-hander with a bright future was a bonus in a trade meant to help both sides. "The idea and the spirit behind everything we were doing was to put Elijah in the best possible position to succeed on and off the field," Friedman said.
